FOUR SEASONS

About

Zbigniew Paluszak observed the surrounding nature with great attentiveness. It was both an inspiration and an answer to many questions, including the purely painterly ones.

Thus, in his later works, the act of painting nature and the world around him became reduced to purely chromatic decisions. One does not need to paint spring grass – its unrestrained green colour is enough. A saturated, vibrating colour, the most vivid green one can create on a palette and transfer onto canvas. From spring’s liveliness only its idiomatic hue remains; it becomes the very essence of the message.

I began with spring because, although the year begins in January, true new life starts in spring, and it is there that vitality and strength reside – it is the first season of every year in the most essential sense. Then comes summer, devouring spring’s greenness with light and deepening reds. And later autumn approaches with rainy, heavy clouds and colours dissolving into browns. Perhaps the landscape reveals itself then, gaining strength and significance. Finally, winter arrives – today rarely white and shimmering with light reflected by snow and ice. Yet this is still the image of winter imprinted in our minds, and perhaps it should remain so, even if it no longer reflects the reality of today’s winter landscape and its colours.

In his paintings, Paluszak presents his own vision of the seasons and the colours that appear within them as he imagines them. I feel that in these compositions he shows what he saw when he closed his eyes and wished to perceive only what mattered most to him – the triumph of colour.
